When should an exhibit use a numbered case key?
A numbered key can help when individual labels would crowd a case or when a grouped reading order is clearer. Each number still needs an unambiguous physical association and a declared reading direction.
Why this matters
The studio groups object entries by case and preserves a public number, title, identity line, and reading-direction note. It flags key entries without a case or cases without a direction.
A reviewable sequence
- Choose numbers that remain distinct at the intended distance.
- Describe the mapping direction, such as clockwise from the entrance.
- Test sight lines and associations with people unfamiliar with the layout.
- Keep a revision record when objects or numbers move.
